Karin Kotani
I’m a senior product designer based in Tokyo, currently designing AI-powered HR products at Scoville. Previously, I worked at Rasa helping launch a Conversational AI platform for enterprise teams, and have also collaborated with teams at Mercedes-Benz.io and other companies across a range of industries.

I studied Graphic Design at Marymount Manhattan College in NYC before moving to Berlin in 2014, and recently relocating to Tokyo.

My passion lies in UX research: digging deep to understand users’ needs, constraints, and pain points, and working closely with cross-functional teams to explore ideas and shape meaningful solutions. At the same time, I value the quiet, focused moments of crafting interfaces, flows, and prototypes. While I strongly advocate for solid discovery work, I’m pragmatic about process and adapt my approach to the needs of each project and team.

It feels like everyone is curious about how designers are using AI in their workflow these days, so here’s mine (nothing groundbreaking): I use Claude to plan UX research, NotebookLM for creating UX repositories and synthesizing research studies, Claude Design to explore design ideas, and Cursor or Claude Code to build prototypes. I still rely on Figma to think through visual directions and work out more complex flows.

Outside of work, I’m a big food lover and used to spend a lot of time trying new restaurants — until I had my first son about three years ago. These days, most of my free time is happily spent playing with him.
